Perceptual Grouping and Figure-Ground Organization - PMC>. I haven't read the whole paper, but skimming it, I was impressed how comprehensively it tracked developments in Gestalt psychology.

With limited theory in UX design, Gestalt principles are one of the few foundations providing a scientific basis for UX decisions. Yet, they seem to be rarely used in practice. If they were, questions like this one would be more common.
