# Does logical thinking or counting develop first in children?

During the course of normal brain development, what comes first:

• logical thinking or
• counting?
• I don't see how this can be meaningfully answered without additional definitions. If you define counting as any form of enumeration, then there is evidence that it is present at a very young age, and even newborn chicks have been shown to be able to do this (look up "subitizing"). Similarly, logical thinking encompasses a very broad number of skills that develop at different time points. Also, just ignore answers below just citing Piaget, psychology isn't a cult. – user3084100 Dec 5 '16 at 13:12

• hmmm thanks, i.e. +1, so far. I thought about more basic logic like if [this] then [that] , not real critical thinking... – draks ... Dec 30 '13 at 21:59
