I know that many teenagers suffer from chronic sleep-deprivation. This varies from country to country, but it is widely known that especially students suffer from this condition. Most have a mild form (averaging less than 7 hours of sleep a day), while some have a severe form (averaging less than 5 or 6 hours of sleep a day) of sleep-deprivation.

Temporary effects of sleep-deprivation might not seem as a surprise. However, which is more concerning is the permanent effects, especially on the brain. Do mild or severe forms of sleep-deprivation have a permanent effect on the cognitive performance of the brain through neuronal death? Maybe measurable by IQ. If so, would it be significant or insignificant and reversible through the restorative function of the brain?
