I am helping some children with math. It seems that adding is easier than subtracting.

When I tell them to start at 5 and add always seven, like

5, 12, 19, 26, 33, 40, 47, 54, 61

it is easier for them than starting at 61 and substract seven.

Is this only caused by our culture, the way we learn an that we use adding more often, or is there any neuronal reason known for that?
