Is there any data on what proportion of ME sufferers believe their illness is primarily mental? As far as I know, there's no scientific consensus.

Have any other illnesses, historically or otherwise, showed a similar pattern of claims about its etiology etc. by its sufferers? If there is a mismatch between scientific or medical belief and its sufferers, how might that be explained, is it just social wide negative stereotypes about 'mental illness' (these are always under control, etc.)?

  • $\begingroup$ I doubt "primarily mental" is something that would be surveyed with any regularity because it sounds a lot like dualism. Perhaps ask somewhere else what proportion of people believe in that... What's a "ME sufferer" anyway? $\endgroup$ – Fizz Mar 25 at 9:32
