We are working in a social entrepreneurship program in which we are trying to enhance the quality of education that elementary school kids get in lower economic status areas within Mexico.

Our Aim is to create a program that aims to enhance kids "self-learning" skills and habits. BUT... We don't really know how to define "self-learning" in a way that could be measured through a set of variables.

What would be a useful definition of "self-learning" and a set of variables with which we could measure it?
